—- ROUGH DRAFT —-
Purple Gallinule: Medium bird with purple-blue
upperparts washed with iridescent green and
deep blue.. Undertail coverts are white. The
flight is labored and slow with dangling legs.
I broke like a god—riotous
and split with love. There was a
rusty chain link fence:
on one side, my heart, like
something diseased, festered.
I have known failure. Yet on
the other side, my milky
sphere of a soul hovered
slightly above the ground, waiting.
How to fuse these efforts?
How to become one?
I want to be firm, yet jarred:
flecked with gold
like the dirt in Mesa.
I want the cool sweep of night
to find me pure
and unbound, guiltless
as the purple gallinule
rising up
to be bathed in shimmering heat.
